Building A Poker Bankroll – Strategy For Success

In order to truly play within your limits and build a bankroll, you must be flexible and have a good holdem bankroll management strategy. Move in and out of limit levels as you find it necessary. It’s your money and your comfort zone at stake. Your poker buddies are not likely to pay your mortgage for you if they’ve peer-pressured you into playing out of your league and you loose it all. If you are serious about improving your game and upping your returns on investment, be wise about the decisions you make. Many players make money at this game and make it look easy. The fact is, they have all paid their dues one way or another. Most have lost plenty of money, practiced countless buy-ins to gain hands-on experience, or have mentors or formal training to guide them.

It is very important that you play at the correct level for the holdem bankroll management strategy that you possess. This is to assure that you will have a better chance of winning more than you lose and going broke. You can build up your bankroll gradually and then move up to the higher level buy-ins if you wish. Starting at a level too high for your experience and bankroll will only serve to discourage you. It could be disappointing to lose all in the first week that you attempt to master this game and win some real cash.

To build your bankroll, you should consider the basic strategy which involves using up to 5 percent of your total bankroll for any one cash game or tournament. This will leverage your bankroll against any fluctuations. A bad run of cards happens to everyone, so be sure you can survive with a good bankroll management strategy.

Let’s look at this in simple terms. If you have a $20 bankroll and play $5 SNG’s, you will be finished after only 4 non-cashing tournaments (like a bad run of cards). If you had played the $1 tournaments instead (maintaining the 5% rule), you would only have lost 20% of your bankroll instead of 100% plus rake. That’s quite a risk if your objective is to build a bankroll and move up to the big leagues.

This simple formula for building a bankroll can make or break you as a poker player. Be sure to stay within your bankroll guidelines, and play consistent poker. If you are unsure about what levels you should be playing at, just ask yourself, am I comfortable? If not, then move down a level or two until you are 100 percent comfortable.
