The Reasons Behind Anxiety Attacks

Anxiety isn’t a come-and-go situation – it’s a medical condition that affects one out of every 20 people around the world. Women are more likely to suffer from this condition than men. But what exactly is anxiety, what causes it, and what are the ramifications of leaving it untreated?

There are various reasons why a person suffers from anxiety. The usual reasons are:

- A family’s genetic buildup. Relatives of people who suffer from anxiety, phobias, depression, or panic attacks are more likely to suffer from some form of mental condition as well. It’s not unusual to pass anxiety from parent to child.

- Stress and serious problems in life. It’s normal to feel anxious whenever we’re faced with some major challenges in life. But this usually isn’t classified as a medical condition, especially if the anxiety goes away after the stress is relieved or when the problems are resolved.

- Anxiety can be one of the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder. It is an unfortunate fact that some people can be severely affected by significant events in their life, like the death of a loved one, an illness or an accident. Sometimes, these events can cause psychological damage and can result in post-traumatic stress disorder. This disorder normally occurs from an experience which is not normally a part of human life.

- Drugs and medications are also leading causes of panic attacks. If you have been taking a certain drug and you suddenly stop, then withdrawal symptoms can also make you anxious over many things.

Anxiety can lead to other different problems in an individuals physical and psychological health. It’s not unusual for a sufferer to also suffer from breathing and sleeping problems, headaches, and nausea.

A severe symptom of anxiety is a panic attack. To both sufferer and eyewitnesses, it can appear to look a heart attack. Panic attacks are normally considered to be elevated levels of anxiety, with most people experiencing shortness of breath. The attacks can be as short as 15 seconds long, although the symptoms of it can last for much longer. Looking at this specific condition from an anxiety cause and effect perspective is often very helpful for diagnosis.

Emotional anxiety plays a big role in the disorder. The effects that anxiety has on people emotionally can be just as severe as the ones that are seen physically and mentally. Depressive thoughts, an inability to cope, obsessive compulsive disorder and a lack of enthusiasm for hobbies are all common side effects.

Another sad reality of anxiety is that sufferers of these kinds of emotional disorder will tend to shy away from loved ones, making themselves feel as though they’re all alone in this battle. Since they can’t understand their own feelings and why they’re going through these situations, pushing away their family and loved ones will just make the situation worse, because this is the time when they need love, affection and care the most. What’s more, anxiety is sometimes labeled incorrectly as social phobia, rendering most treatments ineffective.
