Shopping for shaped cake pans is a lot different now than it was 10 or 15 years ago.  Back then, you were able to head to your local grocery store and pick up whatever the popular character and design cake pans were.  Now, you are lucky to even find the ingredients for the icing at the grocery store!  In this post I want to show you how to find them locally (not the easiest), and how to find them online (the easiest).

Tracking down a cake pan locally will usually require that you live in a big city that has lots of shopping opportunities.  They can be very tough to find.  The best place to start is at your local kitchen supply store.  Places like Williams & Sonoma or Sur La Table will have a few options, but rarely the fun character cake pans.  Local mom and pop kitchen stores will have many more of these, if you are lucky enough to have one in your area.  Another consistent choice is Michaels, but they know how hard these are to find and charge for them accordingly!

Shopping for shaped cake pans online is the absolute easiest way to do it.  Online retailers like Amazon will have all of the current pans at great prices, as well as a few of the retired ones at very high prices.  If you are looking to use one of the more rare and hard to find pans, eBay is a much better choice.  It’s possible to get many of the retired cake pans there for just a few bucks.  It’s unfortunate that many of the most popular cake pans have been retired, but it is a fact that we have to work around!

Baking cakes is as cool now as it was 20 years ago but traditional retailers haven’t quite caught back up.  For now we have to use the easy ways to find them discussed above!
