CCNA Virtual Lab – Advantages and Disadvantages of Using A Router Simulator For Your CCNA Preparation

Cisco introduced simulation type questions into the CCNA exam, and since then it has become crucial that CCNA candidates have some practice on configuring Cisco devices before attempting the test. This is because the simulations probably carry a large number of points for score computational purposes. There are 2 well known ways to get this practice – get some used Cisco equipment or hope that you employer has a lab you can practice on.

The 3rd option is to use a CCNA virtual lab product. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of using a CCNA virtual lab for your exam preparation.

Advantages

1. Portability – By installing the simulator on a laptop, you are able to put in practice hours where ever and when ever you feel like it. For a home lab, you are able to only do this if you are physically close to your home lab.

2. Cheap – The CCNA virtual lab only costs about $100 to $150, which is extremely cheap when you compare this to a real Cisco router. Cisco router packages can cost $1000 or even more, depending on whether the equipment is old or new.

3. Lab Exercises Included – The included lab exercises are like having a certified and qualified instructor next to you. These exercises provide a step by step guide to master the difficult topics you will encounter when doing router configuration.

4. Labs supplement certification books – The lab syllabus and exercises are usually well-aligned with a certification book. If you know what package to buy, you will end up with a comprehensive CCNA education.

Why You Should Not Use One

1. Full set of commands – The commands supported by the simulator is comprehensive enough for your to ace your CCNA exam. However, take note that they are not the full set of CCNA commands and the simulator cannot function as a real router or switch.

2. May not be usable past CCNA – If you are intending to study and pursue further Cisco certifications like the CCNP, the Cisco IOS command set supported by the CCNA simulator will definitely not be sufficient.
