Bring up prostate testing to a friend and watch their reaction. Then listen to the many reasons why they can’t be bothered.
Still dodging the issue isn’t smart actually. Sure guys like to fool themselves about being invincible and all. But some prostate testing can help. Not so sure about invincible but to help you stay fit and healthy.
This is especially true since half of those who develop prostate cancer have no advanced warning. That’s right no signs or symptoms. None. It’s a silent killer that kinda sneaks up on you. Passing through the easily curable stage without so much as a whimper.
Just because you are the healthiest guy in your group of friends doesn’t make you immune either. Eat right. Exercise. Avoid all the bad things others get hooked on and you can still end up with prostate cancer.
This is all the more important if you’re part of an at risk group such as African Americans or those with a family history and the like. Your aura of invincibility isn’t all that great to begin with.
So to be on the safe side you might want to start the annual prostate exam thing going as soon as you hit your 30s. Even though those in lower risk groups might be able to defer it until their mid 40s.
Yet guys tend to avoid going to the doctor unless it’s something serious. Cheerfully taking the approach no news is good news. And in that case seeing no need for the kind of poking and prodding that comes with a digital rectal exam. All of which makes a preventative checkup a hard sell for some.
That’s just not a wise move. Because all it takes it a quick, if admittedly not pleasant, visit to your doctor to catch things early enough to all but avoid a traumatic outcome.
It just takes some blood work, a digital rectal exam (that’s the unpleasant poking part), to detect a problem when it’s most curable. Where you have more treatment options and odds are 9 out of 10 times you’ll be cured.
That’s no exaggeration. Early detection can mean the difference between life and death. Especially if you’re treating the cancer while it’s localized in the prostate itself rather than trying to make up time if it’s spread beyond that.
And I understand the wait-until-you-have-to-do-something attitude and going from there. Still don’t you think this might be one time when being just a bit ahead of the game can pay off?
So put aside your embarrassment. Get past your reluctance to have done what’s involved. It’s not that bad so go ahead an set an appointment to get the testing. Because corny as it may be the life you say may be your own.
If you’re not willing to do that – what’s your excuse?
