Biometrics Security And Its Uses

Biometrics is derived from the Greek words ‘bios’ and ‘metron’. Bios means life and metron means measure. The security that involves biometrics is perceived as biometrics security. It deals with the characteristic features of human being.

In information technology sectors, biometric security is used more often as an identity access management system. This technology is also used to spot individuals inside a group.

Biometric security is divided into two aspects. They are physical and behavior. Physical as the term suggests is concerned with the body like fingerprint, DNA, face recognition, iris recognition, hand and palm geometry identification, smell and so on. Behavior is characterized by voice recognition, typing rhythm etc . Behavioral recognition is a very sophisticated mechanism.

The biometric security systems use the human characteristics on the parameters like uniqueness, universality, permanence, collectability, performance, acceptability and circumvention.

The biometric system works by verification and identification of the individual. The first time an individual uses the biometric security system is perceived as enrolment. In the enrolment the biometric samples of the person is held in the database. During subsequent uses the biometric information is uncovered and verified with the data that was there in the enrolment. Then the person is identified and permitted access to the secured area. Storage and retrieval info in biometric system is terribly crucial for it to function with perfection. The sensor is the interface between real life and the biometric system. This sensor captures and acquires all of the necessary data. Then the unnecessary inputs are removed to boost the content of the required input. Then process extracts the features needed for security verification. Then a template with the features extracted from the source is created. The obtained template is then matched with the existing template already there for the person during enrolment. If the info matches then the person is given access to the prohibited sector which can be anything.

For the performance measurement for biometric systems the analytical tools used are false match rate or false accept rate, fake non-match rate or false reject rate, receiver operating characteristics, equal blunder rate or crossover error rate, failure to enroll rate, failure to capture rate and template capacity. If we increase the sensitivity of the biometric device then the fake accept rate decreases but the false reject rate rises. So, we want to balance both.

Biometric systems should be used in such a manner that there shouldn’t be any discrimination and bad use of the info stored in the database of the individuals.

Biometric system can pose danger to the owners of the secured items. The intention to get the secured access can lead to an irreversible damage to the owner by the miscreant. There are events of owner’s fingers being sliced off for getting access to the secured sector determined by fingerprint scan.

Countries applying biometrics to an enormous extent are US of America, Brazil, Germany, Iraq, Japan, Great Britain, Australia, Canada and Israel. This is surely going to be the safety parameter of the future.
